Analyst: PlayStation 5 price increase will have minimal impact on popular Sony console sales

Announced cost increase PlayStation 5 in Europe and a number of other regions is likely to have a “minimal impact on sales,” analyst firm predicts Ampere Analysis.

Referring to the challenging global economic environment, including high inflation and unfavorable currency trends, this morning Sony accepted “difficult decision” to raise the suggested retail price PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition in almost all markets except the USA. For example, in Europe, the PlayStation 5 has risen in price by 50 euros and will now be sold for €549,99 in the case of the standard model and €449,99 for diskless.

Commenting on the news, Piers Harding-Rolls, director of video game research at Ampere, stated that Sony is unlikely to change its PlayStation 5 sales forecast as demand for the console remains very strong.

“While we think some consumers who have tried unsuccessfully to buy a PS5 or have been putting off purchasing a console just in time for the price increase will be disappointed, strong demand for the Sony device means that a price increase of around 10% in most markets will have minimal impact on sales. We expect Sony’s PS5 sales forecast to remain unchanged,” said Pierce Harding-Rolls.

In the first fiscal quarter of this year, Sony brought to market 2.4 million PS5, which is less than expected, however last month the company said it was not going to change its previously announced console sales forecast for the entire fiscal year of 18 million units.
