Micron unveils incredibly fast GDDR6X memory

Well, it looks like Micron has officially started mass production of its next-generation GDDR6X memory chips, capable of speeds up to 24Gbps. Earlier this year, Micron announced that it was preparing its new 24Gbps GDDR6X memory modules for future graphics cards. The announcement comes at a time when the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti has just entered the market, for which Micron has released 16Gb DRAM modules at speeds up to 21Gbps. Now Micron is going to offer an even faster output speed of 24Gbps at 16Gb density, which means we will again be looking at video memory capacities from 2GB to 24GB via a 384-bit bus interface.

Just like the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, which had all the memory modules on the front of the PCB, the next generation GeForce RTX 4090 will have 12 GDDR6X modules on the front panel, which will provide better cooling compared to solutions that have memory modules installed on the back of the video card. While the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card won’t hit the full 24Gb/s speed (it’s rumored to deliver up to 21Gb/s die speed), 24Gb/s GDDR6X memory modules can deliver up to 1,152TB of bandwidth /sec, a 14% increase from the 1,008TB/sec offered in current 21Gb/sec GDDR6 memory modules. That is, there will certainly be a difference, but in fact it is not as noticeable as it might seem initially.
