Microsoft is preparing Surface Pro 9 on ARM and Intel

Microsoft is reportedly planning to merge the Surface Pro series into a single product line. We currently have a Surface Pro X with an ARM processor and a regular Surface Pro with an Intel processor. By combining both families, consumers will see a future model rumored to be called the Surface Pro 9 that will advertise on both ARM and Intel. The latest rumor comes from Zach Bowden of Windows Central, who claims to have heard from his sources that Microsoft is making the Surface Pro 9 available with two processor options. It’s strange to hear that the company isn’t offering customers an AMD option, given that the latter makes more power-efficient processors than Intel for laptops and 2-in-1s, but it’s possible that AMD’s updated chips are reserved for the Surface laptop series.

As for which processor the ARM version of the Surface Pro 9 will be equipped with, assuming the launch is before the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, it will most likely be the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3. Microsoft will likely rebrand it as SQ3, adding some minor changes. For example, changing the clock speed of the CPU and GPU. Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 is currently only used in Lenovo ThinkPad X13s. In terms of performance, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chipset for Windows laptops can’t beat the M1, let alone the M2. Regardless, performance is decent for an ARM-based Windows machine, although looking at Apple, we wish Qualcomm were more serious in this category.
