Microsoft Surface Pro X webcam stopped working globally

If you’re wondering why the camera on your Surface Pro X suddenly stopped working, then you’re not alone – yesterday, a huge number of Surface Pro X owners took to Reddit complaining that their webcams suddenly stopped working. Surface Pro X owners trying to use the camera encounter an error message – Error Code 0xA00F4271 (0x80004005). Interestingly, this issue affects every Surface Pro X owner. Given the pervasive nature of camera crashes, an expired security certificate is the most likely cause. If you reset the date on the Surface Pro X to anything before May 23, 2023, the camera magically starts working again, confirming the security certificate issue.

However, this is only a temporary solution, as changing the date on the device can lead to authentication problems on secure websites or programs on your PC. Unfortunately, without a working camera, Surface Pro X owners cannot participate in video calls using Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Google Meet, and in general this is a rather unpleasant situation. Microsoft has not yet commented on the situation, so it is likely that the process of finding the problem is still underway. It is strange that recently large companies have increasingly begun to release devices with a lot of bugs and non-working patches – this is not the first case even this year.
