NetEase has opened another studio in Japan to create console games – this time under the direction of producer Dragon Quest

In April reported on the decision of the chief producer Dragon Quest by Ryutaro Itimura leave the company Square Enix after many years of cooperation. However, he did not sit without work for a long time.

Today it became known that Itimura fell under the wing of a Chinese giant NetEasewho opened a new studio for the development of console games for him in Japan PinCool.

NetEase is actively luring Japanese game dev veterans to its side, promising them big budgets and creative freedom. In return, the Chinese hope to get high-quality console games with a Japanese flavor from new partners for a global audience.

Previously, NetEase opened studios in Japan for creator of No More Heroes Goichi Suda, Yakuza father Toshihiro Nagoshi and Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

A press release announcing the formation of PinCool revealed that Itimura’s studio would include entertainment industry experts, including those with experience in film and streaming services. The main field of activity will be the development of console games and the planning of “additional forms of entertainment.”

It’s too early to talk about the first PinCool game. When leaving Square Enix, Itimura said he wanted to try and create “something completely new”.

At Square Enix, he produced games such as Dragon Quest VIII, Dragon Quest IX and Dragon Quest XI. He was also responsible for the development of the franchise outside of the gaming industry, organizing exhibitions, festivals and supervising the release of merchandise.

For Dragon Quest, Japan is the main market, and PinCool will make its games immediately with the expectation of an international audience..
