Research: Only 6% of popular games feature female protagonists

Site staff Solitaired conducted a study and found that in 150 popular video games released between 1985 and 2022, only 6% of the protagonists are female protagonists. For analysis, projects with the highest rating on the IMDbwhile remasters and additions were not taken into account.

The results of the study showed that:

  • 69.3% of games featured a male hero;
  • 13.3% of games had one main character and one heroine;
  • in 8.7% of games it was possible to choose the gender of the character;
  • 6% of the games featured a female heroine.

We are talking about 9 projects: Portal, Portal 2, Beyond: Two Souls, Tomb Raider, Life is Strange, Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Walking Dead: Season Two, Horizon Zero Dawn and Star Wars Battlefront II. By comparison, male protagonists (one or more) are featured in 104 games out of 150 games.

In projects with men and women in the lead roles, the former dominated quantitatively, for example, Left 4 Dead, Heavy Rain and Borderlands 2.

The study also mentions Grand Theft Auto V, in which there was not a single female protagonist. However, everything can change with the release of the next part, where, according to the leak, there will be two characters, one of which is a woman.
