“Secondary, broken and boring”: Critics smashed The Lord of the Rings Gollum – ratings lower than Redfall

Adventure stealth action The Lord of the Rings: Gollum became worst game of 2023 rated by critics on review aggregator sites Metacritic and OpenCritic.

The project is currently rated on Metacritic at an average of 40 points for the PlayStation 5 version and on 43 points for the PC version which puts it at the very bottom of this year’s ranking of games. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum managed to get even lower than Crime Boss: Rockay City and Redfall, which received 52 and 54 points respectively. The remaining versions of Gollum were not included in the list, since at least seven reviews are required to be included in it.

The game currently has an average rating on OpenCritic. 43 out of 100, being in second place from the end in a similar top of releases in 2023. Below is only the farm simulator Across the Valley with 42 points.

The Guardian reviewed the game as “a secondary, uninteresting and fundamentally inferior stealth action game that lacks anything of Tolkien’s original ingenuity”. Push Square commented that it was “a broken game with outrageously outdated level design, clunky controls, a severe lack of polish, muddy and bland graphics, and a boring story.” The reviewer from PCGamesN felt that Gollum’s Middle-earth should never be visited at all, as everything about it is bad, “from grueling and repetitive gameplay to poorly constructed storytelling”.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is out now. There will also be a Switch release later this year.
